Choose to be Great: Adjusting Sails (Y2:E2)

Good Morning!

Over the past week, I’ve talked to many school leaders about the start of the year. While many of them reported that it was off to a great start, others described some struggles. In fact, just about everyone I talked to mentioned something that didn’t go according to plan. Doesn’t that perfectly mirror life?

Here’s a quote that came into mind more than a few times this week:

The pessimist complains about the wind.

The optimist expects it to change.

The leader adjusts the sails.

That quote, by John Maxwell, reminds us that we have the ability to improve our situation. As leaders, this is something that’s inherently required within our roles. We need to be flexible. We need to pivot well. We need to think of alternative solutions. We need to adjust the sails.

As you look back on the imperfections of the start of the year, don’t get stuck complaining about them and don’t fall into the trap of hoping that they’ll change on their own. You’re a leader – create a plan, adjust the sails, and make things better.

Choose to be Great!

Angelo
